For as long as I can remember I’ve loved tiny spaces. When I was a little kid I loved hanging out in our shed. Yep. That’s right. In the shed. I used to take out the bikes and things we stored in there and popped in chairs and things to make my own little space. I had one of those plastic toy houses in the garden… I just loved having my own little space. I’ve never been fussed about having a big space, just a little den to call my own.
A few years ago I discovered the tiny house movement, and literally dived in head first. I feel like I’m at a point now where I’ve pretty much seen it all, my largest Pinterest board is my tiny spaces one… I’ve watched almost every tiny house/RV/camper tour I can find.
I just wanted to use this post to explain my reasons why I want to live tiny. I’m not trying to convert anyone to tiny house living, because I know it’s not for everyone. I just wanted to share something I really love and explain to you guys why I love it so much!
Why a Tiny House?
Ultimately, I believe we should minimise our possessions down to what we actually use and need in our lives. I’m not going to prescribe a certain number of possessions… because that depends on your own needs and circumstances – a family of five is definitely going to need more than a single person!
And even things like clothes are super personal, the size of your wardrobe depends on so many factors, your lifestyle, the climate you live in… and your own preferences. I feel like some minimalists sometimes forget about the importance of our own desires. Sure, I could survive with two pairs of trousers and a pair of shoes… but I want to be comfortable, I love wearing pretty clothes. So it’s a case of having enough variety balanced with keeping everything to a manageable amount.
I debated for a long time between a van and a tiny house, I love the whole #VanLife movement… of course the aesthetic but the philosophy behind it more than anything as Minimalism on Wheels always says in his podcasts
Minimalism on Wheels means I’m not leaving anything behind when I travel
(If you don’t listen to his podcast already then go and check it out!) but in all honesty, I’m not the biggest traveller in the world. At this point in my life… I don’t really feel the need to go remote and travel around (plus I don’t drive… but that’s a side point for now!)
So I decided that #VanLife wasn’t for me right now – not ruling it out though! – so I then was left with Tiny Houses…. and the more I jumped into the lifestyle, the more I realised that was the world for me. I fell in love. I fell in love with the shipping container homes, tiny cottages, hobbit holes, homes on wheels. It gave me space and freedom that I was looking for, and had the cool gadgets and things I loved – stairs with a wardrobe space built in? YES.
I love how creative the Tiny House community is. How they find solutions to problems I didn’t even know were problems.
And being just under 5 foot, I never have to worry about whether I have enough space. I’m a single person and so don’t really need to worry about fitting anyone else into my space.
Owning My Space
One thing that has bothered me since going to university is renting. Renting always bothered me. I’m 23. I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money already on rent. Just an estimate, but I’d say that 3/4 of my life purchases has been on rent. I rented for 4 years. And I have nothing to show for it, no property of my own or space. Just lined the pockets of someone else. It did give me a roof over my head, but that money has just gone out the door.
Whilst at university, I decided that I would make sure I would avoid renting after university. Thankfully I’m lucky enough to be living with my parents now and so don’t have to worry about finding a place… and totally aware not everyone has this option! But I decided I would take advantage of this situation to try and give myself a living situation that wouldn’t leave me renting for decades with no security.
Ultimately I just love the idea of being in control of your own space. Being able to see everything, being able to understand how it all works and being able to fix minor problems when they go wrong. I'm just looking for a slower,… Click To Tweet
I’ve never wanted a huge home, just a space that is actually mine. That I have bought.
Building My Own?
I haven’t decided whether or not to build my own tiny house yet. I’m looking into it as an option because I think it would be super rewarding to live in a space that I have built for myself, but if it seems like it could go too wrong or be too demanding, I’m more than happy to pay for someone qualified to build it.
I’ve been working on the plans myself and will be doing the design myself, but will, of course, get it checked after I’m happy with it to make sure that it’s actually safe and will be possible to build!

Would this be a blog post if I wasn’t plugging my biggest Pinterest board? My Tiny House board is my goal board. It’s a selection of Tiny Houses, apartments and campers that I love. I use these to draw inspiration into my own designs. I’m always looking for new ways to design and build tiny homes and so I use this board just to organise my thoughts! And it’s one of the first of my boards to start using the sections function!
On the topic of Pinterest, here’s a Pinterest graphic below! I’d really appreciate some feedback on this graphic as it’s the first Pinterest one I’ve ever created! But I love Pinterest and so thought it was probably time to start creating some graphics for my own posts.
If you guys enjoy this graphic, I might try and make a banner photo to match this style instead of the current one as it ties into my blog design better!
